Each class is individual.
Using Alexander Technique, a teacher guides a student into an awareness of tensions and patterns of use and uses voice or hands to gently amplify this awareness, while encouraging the dispersion of unnecessary tensions. The teacher will also suggest and support an exploration of new patterns of thought and movement that are more coordinated with the design of the body.
After lessons, students typically report greater ease of movement; a feeling of poise and lightness; reduced wear and tear and often less pain and injury.
In addition, the Technique can clarify thinking, lighten certain anxieties and make creativity more accessible.
Alexander Technique is not massage or a treatment. You will remain fully clothed. It can involve table work (the teacher works with the student in a prone position to encourage release). Typically, that release will then be brought into a physical activity. Lessons can also focus on working in activity, where the student explores a particular activity he or she selects (sitting, standing, exercising, reading, working on the computer, piano, phone, etc.).
We will use the Alexander Technique to discover an easier way to approach whatever you are doing.
Habits can be difficult to change. Lessons demonstrate new possibilities and give the student an opportunity to adjust and experiment in a safe and supportive environment. The student who applies ideas and insights gained in lessons to their daily life will reap the biggest benefits. In truth, the ideas apply to anything you do, so there is plenty of scope for experimentation.
Policies and Fees
Alexander Technique is steady, incremental learning. New students benefit most from a 5 lesson commitment in order to experience the accumulated effect of the Technique.
Lessons and Scheduling: In-Person or Virtual
(1) TO BEGIN we’ll schedule a short telephone conversation to ensure it’s a good fit before booking a lesson.
(2) IN-PERSON lessons will be taught in my home studio in Jamaica Plain, MA.
Masks are available upon request. In-person students can request a switch to a virtual format with 24 hours advance notice.
(3) VIRTUAL Lessons are available via Zoom. I will forward a link once the appointment is booked. You will need to download ZOOM to your device, if you don’t already have it. The free version is sufficient.
For Virtual lessons, you’ll want a quiet space with privacy, and room to move or lie down. You’ll need a towel and/or book to provide head support when lying down. A hard backed chair is also useful. Find a stable location for your device that allows you to adjust sight angles as we work together. Experimenting in advance will maximize lesson time.
(4) ATTIRE: No special attire is required, simply wear something that lets you move comfortably.
Fees and Payment:
An individual lesson is $100 for 60 minutes, either in-person or virtual. I offer a 10% discount for block purchases of 5 or more lessons. Payment by cash or check is acceptable.
